Simple Steps to Diversity Awareness

Become an exemplary Diversity Practitioner! This course is for professionals, carers and anyone interacting with 3 - 7 year olds

Course Summary

A course for teachers, parents and carers of 3 - 7 year olds (and beyond!) that provides an insight into how to promote Diversity Awareness positively to those around us.

Promoting Diversity Awareness in society as a whole is a pressing issue. It’s something we all want to do better, but many of us honestly don’t know where to begin. We want a fairer society for all, but how can we start to achieve that when the journey seems to be so difficult and fraught with danger?

Well that’s where Musicbuds comes in. Let us guide you through some of the issues relating to promoting Diversity Awareness. In small 15-minute blocks we take you from feeling unsure and unconfident about how to approach this subject, to the confident position of being able to effectively discuss, demonstrate and exemplify true Diversity Awareness-in-action.

The 15-minute blocks are further broken down into 3 sections: a 5-minute prompt (generally something to read or watch), a 5-minute reflection relating to this issue, and then a 5-minute episode where we relate the issue to our own context and situation. This process allows us to identify ways in which we can improve our own practice and become exemplary role-models for our children and colleagues. One little step at a time.

Here’s an outline of what the course contains:

In this 6-week course, after defining what Diversity Awareness actually means to us here at Musicbuds (there are so many conflicting definitions out there!), we take an overview the different threads that make up Diversity Awareness, before exploring some of the issues in more depth and discovering ways in which we can both challenge and strategise our responses to them.

Once we have some knowledge of the important areas, we begin to create our own, personal Diversity Policy, which we can then go on to use to inform our own practice, behaviours and lifestyles.

Adopting new approaches to promoting Diversity in young children doesn’t have to be done through strident voices and intimidating actions. Often, the biggest changes start with the smallest steps…

In this course you will learn:
•how to define ‘Diversity Awareness’ clearly and succinctly, and in a way that resonates with you
•why Diversity itself is such an important and positive influence to society as a whole
•how to map the developmental stages of 3 - 7 year olds onto their own understandings and perceptions of Diversity Awareness
•how to be mindful; to recognise, and react to, the negative aspects of Diversity
•how to become more alert and sensitive to the negative nuances influencing our behaviours towards Diversity
•how to be an exemplary Diversity practitioner

The Course Materials include:
•Bitesize progressive lessons scheduled over the duration of the course to prevent feelings of overwhelm
•Accommodation of a wide variety of presentation methods - visual, audio, text content - to suit every learning style

Dr Clare Seymour

Clare has spent much of her professional career (over 30 years) in international settings. Part of her Doctoral research involved exploring the often hidden aspects of institutional racism. As a result she has a longstanding interest in, and passion for, promoting positive Diversity.

In addition to school music-teaching, Clare also has over 10 years' experience working as an international music examiner - an understanding and respect for Diversity is so crucially important in every aspect of her practice.

In her work as a music-education consultant for the BBC she has completed several song-writing commissions for the 3 - 7 age group and loves the way she can weave pedagogical integrity and diversity awareness together through enjoyable and engaging songs.

Thanks for the Diversity Course. Just to let you know I’ve been following it closely, studying it carefully, and reading the associated (and very informative) emails in detail - it’s fascinating - just wanted to give kudos as very important structural bias to tackle!
